Dailymotion is a France based video-sharing website where users can upload, share and watch videos just like YouTube. Offering mixed content from users and independent creators, Dailymotion is one of the biggest video sharing platforms in the world.
Dailymotion was a new idea in 2012, when Orange, a Telecom company of France, announced to take over its control. Despite the heavy investments Orange was unable to get the desired results and Dailymotion gradually lost the ground. Later the shares were transferred to Vivendi who owns now 90% of company’s capital.
Dailymotion Hacked – More Than 85 Million User Accounts Stolen
Dailymotion started the week off right. As per the sources, the worldwide famous video portal was actually targeted by hackers in last October. It became worse when hackers accessed the database and stole over 85 million user accounts.
According to LeakedSource, “the Dailyomtion data breach appears to have taken place on October 20, 2016, which means it is possible that hackers have been circulating the data for over a month”.
Sources indicate that stolen data consists of 85.2 million user accounts, 20% of which had hashed passwords attached to them. Luckily, the passwords were protected. Dailymotion uses Bcrypt hashing algorithm with ten rounds of rekeying, making it difficult to gain access to actual passwords.
ZDNet had received a sample of stolen data from Dailymotion and said that, “We verified the data by matching up plaintext passwords with hashed passwords found against the email address using a readily available online tool. In one case, the email address and password combination were unique to Dailymotion suggesting that the data could only have come from the video-sharing site”.
They also added that, “We also reached out to a number of people whose email addresses were found in the data, but nobody responded by the time of publication. But because of the password security and that only a portion of the accounts had associated passwords, the damage is somewhat limited for Dailymotion customers”.
We recommend you to change your passwords as you might be one of the users whose hashed passwords were leaked.
