On Wednesday, Microsoft and Intel launched Project Evo, the highly anticipated partnership to create personal computers of next generation. The project aims at new advancements in four key areas of Windows 10—gaming, advanced security, mixed reality, and artificial intelligence.

Terry Myerson, executive vice president at Devices and Windows Group at Microsoft, disclosed some plans of Project Evo at the WinHEC (Windows Hardware Engineering Community) event in Shenzhen, China. Through this collaboration, Microsoft and Intel will push the limits of personal computers in near future. The areas under development include biometric and voice authentication, HDR support, spatial audio, far-field speech and wake-on-voice enabled through Cortana. The ultimate goal is to make Windows for PC the central hub of home entertainment in 2017.

The first focus area of Project Evo is to improve communication with the help of Cortana. Instead of only obliging to the person using the PC, Intel and Microsoft will expand that to allow Cortana function across the entire room.

Next up is mixed reality. The objective here is to ensure that head-mounted displays and PCs are affordable for everyone, since they are way too expensive now. This will make the HoloLens consumer-friendly and some major developments in Windows Holographic Development Program. Here, the role of Intel will be to provide cheap hardware required for running headsets.

The next fragment of Project Evo is security, the prime concern of every device connected to Internet. Windows Hello already includes security functions such as using your fingerprint, iris, or face, but Microsoft wants to improve its biometric authentication as well as expand this to other Windows PCs as well. (Windows Hello needs either Intel RealSense Camera or Fingerprint reader)

The last one is gaming. Lately we have been hearing about HDR (High Dynamic Range) and 4K gaming. It was mostly due to the launch of new Sony PS4. Microsoft will focus on these two areas as well as Spatial audio, Wide Color Gamut, and Xbox with native Bluetooth. Considering the upcoming Project Scorpio in 2017, all these areas are very important and need considerable attention.

In conclusion, Project Evo represents a future where an affordable PC, capable of virtual reality experience, will allow you to command Cortana from across the room, with an assurance that any malware or virus won’t be ruining your day.
